There is no denying all the controversy surrounding President Donald Trump being elected. There are many people upset, appalled, and even saying he is “not their president.” Then there are others supporting him and saying to give him a chance. In the fashion world he started some drama as well. Who will dress Melania Trump? Usually, all the top designers are jumping at the chance to dress the First Lady. This time it is quite different. Some designers have refused to dress her because they do not support or agree with her husband’s policies and opinions. Other designers say to put politics aside and to dress her. Some designers that will not dress her are Sophie Thellat, Marc Jacobs, Phillip Lim, Derek Lam, Tom Ford, and many others. Sophie Thellat in an open letter said “The rhetoric of racism, sexism, and xenophobia unleashed by her husband’s presidential campaign are incompatible with the shared values we live by.” Marc Jacobs told Women’s Wear Daily, “Personally, I’d rather put my energy into helping out those who will be hurt by [Donald] Trump and his supporters.”
Other famous designers have come out saying they would dress Melania like Diane Von Furstenberg, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, and Carolina Herrera. Diane Von Furstenberg said to Women’s Wear Daily, “Donald Trump was elected and he will be our president. Melania deserves the respect of any first lady before her. Our role as part of the fashion industry is to promote beauty, inclusiveness, diversity. We should each be the best we can be and influence by our example.”
This issue has been one of whether you let politics and your beliefs affect the fashion industry. In my opinion I would never dress Melania and support Trump in any way. However, I do understand where the designers for dressing Melania are coming from.
